Educational Programs // Asthma Education Program

Vancouver Hospital has an Asthma Education Program tailored to help asthma patients successfully manage their asthma. This program runs Monday to Friday from 8:30am – 4:30pm by appointment and referral only. The program is run on a daily basis by Carmen Rempel, a Registered Respiratory Therapist and Certified Asthma Educator and is overseen by Respirologist Dr. Mark FitzGerald.

Virtually everyone with asthma should be able to go about his or her daily activities with little or no discomfort from symptoms. Understanding asthma makes this possible. Our program aims to give clients the knowledge and skills needed to confidently and appropriately manage their asthma.

Attend the Asthma Education Program and learn:

  • What asthma is
  • Asthma symptoms and what they mean
  • Triggers that worsen your asthma and how to avoid them
  • The roles of asthma medications and how to use them
  • How to monitor your asthma using a peak flow meter and an individually tailored action plan

This program is provided as a free service and our goal is to assist clients to gain confidence and better control over their asthma through education, counseling, and guidance. The Asthma Education Program at Vancouver Hospital is a flexible, practical program, individually tailored to every patient’s needs. We hope to help our clients understand asthma, learn and practice the skills necessary to manage asthma, and be supported for adopting appropriate asthma management behaviors.

Educational Programs // COPD Clinic

Patients are now being welcomed, by referral, to the COPD Clinic at The Lung Centre. The clinic is held every Friday from 8:30 am to 12:30 pm. Dr. Jeremy Road, Medical Director of the clinic, along with a team of respirologists with special interests in COPD, will be seeing patients on an ongoing basis. They will also have a chance to learn about our extensive COPD Education Program, through meetings with our COPD educator Carmen Rempel RRT, CAE.

Although COPD cannot be cured, our COPD Clinic and Education Program can help patients find the right treatment plan and teach them strategies that can be used to manage their daily activities leading to a more active and fulfilling lifestyle.

Attend the COPD clinic for:

  • Lung function assessments
  • Consultations with a Respirologist to obtain the best treatment plan
  • And see the COPD educator to discuss:
    • What COPD is
    • Smoking cessation
    • Self-management strategies
    • Proper inhaler techniques
    • Recognizing a flare-up
    • Safe promotion of an active lifestyle, etc.

We will also assess the need for referrals to other specialists such as nutritionists, pharmacists and occupational therapists, and also to the Vancouver General Hospital Pulmonary Rehabilitation Program.
